PORT JERVIS - A Port Jervis High School art teacher is accused of sexually abusing a student both on and off school grounds.

State police say an investigation revealed that Ashley Kaufman, 30, had an inappropriate relationship for months with a 16-year-old former student.

Capt. Pierce Gallagher says the alleged relationship began at the start of the school and that police were just recently tipped off by someone else who found out.

Kaufman is charged with forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Port Jervis school officials say they are aware of the allegations and are conducting their own investigation into the matter.
