CARMEL - Putnam County Clerk Dennis Sant is holding firm on his decision not to supply pistol permit owners' names to The Journal News.

The newspaper published an interactive map last week that shows the names and addresses of tens of thousands of gun permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. The names were obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.

The paper's editors say the public has a right to know where guns are in the aftermath of the Newtown, Conn. school massacre, but Sant says it violates the privacy of gun owners who follow the law.

Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell says she's backing her county clerk's decision 100 percent.

State Sen. Greg Ball says he's pushing legislation to prevent such publication in the future.
