RAMAPO - The Ramapo Central School District is looking to change its name.

The school district wants to differentiate itself from the nearby troubled East Ramapo School District, which serves students in Spring Valley.

The Ramapo district's students are from other communities like Airmont, Montebello and Sloatsburg.

In a statement to News 12, Ramapo Central officials claim the two districts are constantly mixed up, saying they routinely receive inquiries intended for East Ramapo. They say for that reason they have "decided to pursue a formal change of name with the Commissioner of Education from our current name to the 'Suffern Central School District.'"

The name was chosen because both Suffern High School and Suffern Middle School are in the Ramapo Central district.

There is no word on when the change might be approved or take effect.
