RAMAPO - Protesters demanded Wednesday that Ramapo Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence step down as jury selection begins in the federal corruption case against him.

A small group of protesters gathered along Route 59 to call for St. Lawrence's resignation. The embattled town supervisor is facing 22 counts of fraud and conspiracy charges for allegedly lying about the town's finances and using millions of taxpayer dollars to fund Provident Bank Park.

St. Lawrence has pleaded not guilty, but prosecutors do have a star witness, former Deputy Town Attorney Aaron Truther, who has pleaded guilty in the case and has agreed to testify against St. Lawrence.

People living in Ramapo say the case put the town in a negative spotlight, and they want that to change.

Once jury selection is completed, the trial is expected to last at least six weeks.
