RAMAPO - The arrest of Ramapo's town supervisor has observers asking what Christopher St. Lawrence stood to gain by pushing the construction of Provident Bank Park and allegedly "cooking the books" to get it financed.

State records show that St. Lawrence raked in nearly three-quarters of a million dollars in campaign donations since 2010, as the ballpark was being built. Records show most of the donations were made by construction-based companies.

News 12 confirmed Friday that several donors helped build the ballpark, including the job's general contractor, Pearl River-based Holt Construction, which contributed $20,000.

Workers at Holt Construction did not want to be seen on camera and referred News 12 to manager Jay Holt, but News 12's calls went unreturned.

Federal authorities have charged St. Lawrence with fraudulently financing the ballpark at taxpayers' expense, but said Thursday it did not appear as though he "directly benefited."

St. Lawrence, who was among several charged in connection with the alleged scheme, has maintained his innocence. He returned to work on Friday.
