NEWBURGH - U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY 18th District) is proposing legislation that would put limits on the U.S. Coast Guard's options when it comes to its plan to allow more barges anchored along the Hudson River.

The Coast Guard's proposal to establish 10 new anchorages for barges with crude oil continues to draw bipartisan opposition. Maloney's legislation would prevent barges from being anchored at key sites along the river.

Tompkins Cove is one of the anchorage locations approved by the Coast Guard, and that proposal has generated outrage on both sides of the Hudson, from Kingston to Yonkers.

Mayors and other local officials have spent the past few months blasting the Coast Guard's plans. Newburgh residents who spoke with News 12 seem to agree that the barges are bad for the river.

Maloney says his proposal is only in its preliminary stages. A public comment period will be ending in December.

The Coast Guard has not yet responded to Maloney's proposal.
