Residents address land deal concerns with town board at Monroe meeting

The Department of Environmental Conservation has extended two deadlines in deciding who will oversee the state environmental quality review, or SEQR, in a proposal to rezone 500 acres of land into Kiryas Joel from Monroe. (5/5/14)

MONROE - Dozens gathered in the Town of Monroe on Monday to continue the fight over 500 acres of land.

During the town board meeting, residents asked United Monroe leader Emily Convers questions about their ongoing concerns after the state postponed its decision as to who will be the lead agency to oversee the Hassidic community of Kiryas Joel's expansion plans.

Later in the night, a town resident was removed from the meeting while Supervisor Harley Doles was announcing his support of Pat Coppola as candidate for town council.

Amidst the controversy, Doles also announced Town Attorney Jim Galvin's resignation, citing a conflict of interest and Convers' involvement in Monroe Village government.
