Restaurant owner affected by Nepal quake raises money

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS - A restaurant owner is getting the news he feared about his family in Nepal.

Gyaljen Nuru is the owner of Himalaya Restaurant in Yorktown Heights. He and his family are from Khumbu, at the base of Mount Everest.

Gyaljen's 28-year-old cousin was on the mountain and killed by the force of an avalanche when the quake hit.

Gyaljen's loyal customers learning of the tragedy are now comforting him with hugs and flowers. Others are donating money.

The 7.9-magnitude earthquake has killed almost 5,000 people and injured more than 9,700. According to UNICEF, around 1.7 million children are in urgent need of aid.

Despite his grief, Gyaljen has set up a table outside of his restaurant in hopes of collecting donations from the public. In just a just a few hours, he has raised almost $1,000 for earthquake victims.
