WEST NYACK - Members of the Rockland Legislature approved one of the most restrictive drone laws in the state.

The law, which was passed last week, states that aerial drones can only be flown on the user's property. Drone users would be restricted from flying them on private property and public lands unless an owner or municipality gives them permission. It also prohibits the use of drones within 100 feet of schools, houses of worship, government buildings and jails.

County Executive Ed Day expressed some reservations saying the law is ambiguous. He believes the regulations could criminalize innocent behavior.

Drone users say they feel unfairly targeted. The say the law does ruin some of the fun.

Anyone who violates the law would be fined $250 for the first offense and $500 for the second offense. Anyone who violates the law more than three times in two years could serve jail time.

The county executive still needs to decide whether to sign off on the law, veto the measure or let it go into law without his signature.
