POMONA - Rockland County is joining communities around the world by collecting hurricane-relief supplies for Haiti as the Caribbean nation struggles to recover from Hurricane Matthew.

County Executive Ed Day wants to help the relief effort and donate some supplies from the former Summit Park Hospital and Nursing Home.

"We have a significant Haitian-American population here," Day says. "There's a lot of concern, so it's our way of mobilizing the people of Rockland's efforts to help the people of Haiti."

The county wants to donate blankets, sheets, hospital gowns and other items from Summit Park. They were originally slated to be sold at auction for about $5,000. Before the county can donate the items to Haiti, legislators must first declare them surplus items. Day hopes lawmakers do that quickly.

Members of the group Rockland County Haiti Relief say the donated linens will be put to good use.

"They'll be very beneficial to the clinics that we are trying to establish in the areas that were hardest hit,” says Sandra Oates, who works with the relief program. “So we'll be able to furnish them with these supplies,"

At least 500 people were killed last week when the storm buffeted Haiti.
