VALLEY COTTAGE - Roofers are offering tips to homeowners to prevent roof collapses in the wake of last week's snowstorms.

Heavy snow and ice have brought down roofs throughout the Hudson Valley, including at a retreat center in Stony Point and a sports complex in Nanuet.

Tom O'Grady, of Affordable Roofing in Valley Cottage, says the problem is ice clogging storm drains. The ice gives the melting snow no place to go, creating leaks and weakening the roof. He suggests chipping away at the ice and clearing the pipes.

O'Grady adds homeowners should also clear off the lower 3 feet of the roof's edge to prevent collapses.
