CRAGSMOOR - Firefighters from throughout the Hudson Valley are assisting in battling a large brush fire in Ulster County.

More than 200 state and local firefighters are working to put out the blaze, which spread to around 2,000 acres by Tuesday afternoon.

The fire is being called the "Sam's Point Fire" after it was discovered Saturday in the Sam's Point Preserve area of Minnewaska State Park.

Highly combustible underbrush and with dry, windy conditions set the stage for a blaze that quickly spread through the park, with flames at times reaching 40 feet in height.

Dense fog, along with rain and high humidity Tuesday, swept over the small community of Cragsmoor, providing relief on the fourth day of firefighting.

Officials say they believe it will be several more days until the fire could be fully extinguished.

News 12 is told no public or private buildings are currently in any immediate danger from the fire.
