NEWBURGH - Supporters of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders turned out to the Newburgh waterfront Friday for a rally ahead of New York's primary vote on April 19.

Hundreds of people turned out as supporters took the stage to speak on behalf of the Democratic presidential candidate. Some supporters signed up to volunteer for the campaign.

Sanders is coming off of a debate with rival Hillary Clinton in Brooklyn Thursday night.

He grew up in Brooklyn before moving to Vermont decades ago, and Clinton has put her campaign headquarters there.

Sanders' supporters say that the candidate was not available to actually make an appearance at the rally because he's visiting the Vatican.

The candidate appeared at a conference there.
