TUXEDO - The Tuxedo School Board voted Tuesday night to keep George F. Baker High School open, despite the district losing most of its students.

School officials applied to the state to become a charter school, but the state turned down their application. The denial means that a long-running relationship with the Greenwood Lake School District is over.

Greenwood Lake School Board members earlier voted to no longer give their students the option of staying at George F. Baker. The school will now lose 70 percent of its student population.

Residents say they are worried about the viability of such a small school, citing concerns regarding sports, advanced-placement classes and teachers who may leave for a larger school.

Greenwood Lake students will now choose between the Warwick and Chester school districts.

The Tuxedo Board of Education is also deciding whether to accept or a deny a contract from Greenwood Lake that would allow juniors to finish their senior year at George F. Baker.
