NEWBURGH - Sen. Charles Schumer (D) is lobbying to secure more than $4 million in federal funding for Stewart International Airport in Newburgh.

While a nearly empty Stewart International Airport is great for people running late for flights, it's not great for businesses.

Schumer says the airport's 80-year-old water and sewage lines are partly to blame, and that crumbling infrastructure prevents airlines from an expansion.

On Monday, he asked for money to modernize the infrastructure. The money would also help develop the unused 2,400 acres of land at the airport.

"What we need now is to develop that and we need the infrastructure to develop that," he says.

Lawmakers say it would also bring much-needed jobs to the area.

Some of the businesses he expects to come are hotels. Schumer is optimistic they will get the funding, saying priority typically goes to projects that bring jobs.
