MOUNT VERNON - The mayoral race in Mount Vernon is heating up.

Democratic State Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson announced her candidacy Friday morning on the steps of City Hall with many supporters behind her. She says that the city is in dire need of new development and new leadership.

Mayor Ernie Davis's long tenure has been met with scandal. In February, he was sentenced to one-year probation after pleading guilty to federal tax evasion. The mayor has already paid back a $10,000 and says, despite his personal financial troubles, he is still seeking re-election.

Hassell-Thompson, a former nurse, has represented Mount Vernon and parts of the Bronx as a state Senator since 2000. So far, she's the only candidate to challenge Davis.

However, there is speculation about the possible candidacy of City Councilwoman Deborah Reynolds and Councilman Richard Thomas.

Thomas released a statement reading in part, “While the senator has served with distinction, residents have had enough with professional politicians. Mt. Vernon needs a modern mindset to actively engage the broad and complex challenges to win the future."

Petitions for the office are expected to be filed by the summer, according to the county Board of Elections.
