CONGERS - Congers residents say their new neighbor, a convicted child sex offender, lives just 175 feet away from a day care center.

Jamie Katz, 48, was convicted of sodomizing a 12-year-old boy in 2009. He now lives on Highway Avenue near the Nella di Nuovo Daycare and just down the street from a school bus stop.

State Sen. David Carlucci says he wants stricter legislation governing where sex offenders can go.

"It's really unsettling to think that I could be dropping my son off at day care and there could be a Level III sex offender living next door," Carlucci says.

Carlucci says current state law bans sex offenders whose victims were under 18 years old from knowingly going within 1,000 feet of school buildings. That definition does not extend to day care and pre-K facilities.

The State Parole Board, which oversees sex offender regulations, has not responded to a request for comment.
