MONROE - The annual reorganization meeting of the Monroe Town Board underwent a startling shakeup last evening.

Monday night’s meeting started off as planned as Tony Cardone and Mike McGinn were sworn in to the town council.

However, the meeting took a surprising turn when Cardone was unanimously voted in as acting supervisor, while Town Supervisor Harley Doles is out on medical leave.

Doles had appointed longtime councilman Jerry McQuaid, but the new town council chose otherwise. Regarding the change in acting supervisor, Doles told News 12, "I wish him luck."

Many feel the vote reflects some of the unhappiness with how the town has been run for years and how some people are upset by the former board's decision to give Hassidic neighbors in Kiryas Joel land to build multi-family housing.

Cardone and McGinn say residents can expect a lot of changes this coming year, including more public comment, transparency and better financial management.

There is no word on when Supervisor Doles will return to the board.
