South Salem couple loses home to fire for second time

SOUTH SALEM - A home in Northern Westchester was completely destroyed by fire yesterday.

Officials say the call came in at around 2 p.m. at a waterfront home at 81 Twin Lakes Road. It took nearly 70 firefighters to extinguish the flames. Because of the remote location of the house, there were no fire hydrants in the area and water had to be pumped out of a lake.

No one was injured in the fire, officials say.

Peter and Betty Traveyz say this is the second time they have lost a home to a fire at the same address. They say a similar experience happened in 1981. The couple is staying with their daughter until they can rebuild.

Investigators say the fire started in a second-floor bathroom, but they are still working to determine the cause.
