GARNERVILLE - A special education teacher in the North Rockland School District was arrested for the alleged physical and mental abuse of four special needs children in her care.

Yessenia Vasquez, 43, of Garnerville, was charged with endangering the welfare of a physically disabled minor, unlawful imprisonment and harassment.

North Rockland School officials say they first learned of the alleged wrongdoing in December. The district says it launched its own internal investigation, interviewing numerous staff members including those present at the time of the alleged incidents. They say the district handled the matter administratively and Vasquez returned to school.

Last month, someone called the New York State Child Abuse Hotline, prompting a police investigation.

The district says Vasquez, who has worked in the district for 20 years, is back on administrative leave. She was released on an appearance ticket and is due back in court next month.
