St. John the Baptist Church in Piermont at risk of closing, merging with church in Nyack

Thousands of people have signed a petition against the closure. (7/2/14)

PIERMONT - A Piermont church is at risk of closing and merging with a nearby church, upsetting many parishioners.

St. John the Baptist Church, which has been in Piermont for more than 160 years, could possibly close soon as the Archdiocese of New York consolidates parishes. Cardinal Dolan says the needs and demographics of the church has changed and they need to adapt.

St. John the Baptist is expected to merge with St. Ann's in Nyack.

The church serves 700 families, around 300 who participate in the church's unique Spanish-speaking services. Thousands of people have signed a petition circulated around the parish in protest of a possible move.

A decision about what churches will be closing will be made in a few months.
