NYACK - State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has announced a crackdown on synthetic drugs.

Schneiderman said stores such as the Liquid Glass Shop in Nyack sold synthetic drugs, a problem that is growing across the state.

Synthetic marijuana, often marketed as K2 or Spice, has caused a tenfold increase in emergency room and poison control center visits this year in the state, according to Schneiderman.

The drugs exist in a legal gray area, which is why Schneiderman filed a lawsuit instead of criminal charges against companies selling the substances. That is also why the drugs continue to be sold with often dangerous side effects.

"Synthetic pot is much more likely to produce seizures and psychological damage than actual marijuana," Schneiderman said.

Shoppers along South Broadway in Nyack also said they support the attorney general's push to crack down on the so-called designer drugs.
