SPRING VALLEY - The village of Spring Valley has until early November to get its buildings department back on track or face a state takeover.

The village is behind in inspecting housing, businesses and even private schools.

An investigation by the state confirmed the village is failing to ensure that buildings in the community are safe.

The order comes after local emergency responders questioned the safety of dozens of yeshivas and schools in Rockland County.

County Executive Ed Day says Rockland is ready to step in and do the work, if the village can't.

"This is something the state asked us and I'm very hopeful the mayor can manage this," Day says. "We're not looking for extra work. We're really not."

The state has given Spring Valley 30 days to conduct the building inspections and has reportedly threatened a takeover if the village does not comply.
