Students return to White Plains school with heavy hearts

WHITE PLAINS - Many students at the Windward School in White Plains returned to class this morning with heavy hearts after the loss of three of their classmates in a fatal Christmas Day fire in Stamford, Conn.

Lily Badger, 10, and 7-year-old twin sisters Grace and Sarah Badger, died after their home was engulfed in flames due to improperly discarded fireplace embers. Their grandparents were also killed in the fire.

A private wake will be held for the girls on Wednesday at a funeral home on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. A funeral will take place Thursday at the St. Thomas Church in Midtown Manhattan.

Grief counselors were on hand to help students and staff cope with the tremendous loss on the first day back from the winter vacation.
