CLARKSTOWN - The Clarkstown police chief who has been suspended with pay since last week is denying all charges against him.

After a formal written response Thursday, Michael Sullivan is denying all of the charges against him. Most of the charges involve misconduct.

In mid-July, Clarkstown's police chief was given an ultimatum by the towns Supervisor George Hoehmann and the rest of the board to either step down after 33 years of service or face the consequences.

Sullivan opted to fight seven charges of misconduct and incompetence and many people in town are rallying behind him.

One of the charges claims he failed to reassign his Director of Intel to the detective division after he had allegedly spoken with a reporter, divulging confidential information.

Sullivan says he launched an investigation and did comply with the order as soon as the sergeant returned to work from vacation.

"To me it's incredible that you would take away the head of intelligence and the head of your police department in one fail swoop over charges that are just nothing, they really are nothing," says Sullivan.

Another claim alleges he posted confidential remarks in a social media post on the town's Facebook page. Sullivan says his response did not include any information of a privileged or confidential nature.

In a statement Thursday, an attorney appointed to prosecute Sullivan said, "From police chiefs to patrolmen, the rules of conduct that govern a transparent police department apply to everyone. It's unfortunate Mr. Sullivan believes he is above the law and lives by his own rules."

Sullivan denies the allegations and says he dedicates his life to the law and is not above it.
