WAWAYANDA - Three people, including a child, were killed in a crash on I-84 Wednesday morning.

Police say the crash happened just before 4 a.m. on the westbound side of I-84 in Wawayanda between exits 2W and 3W.

They say 29-year-old Jesenia Valentin, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, ran out of gas and called 911 for assistance.

About three minutes into the call, the line went dead, but not before the operator heard the impact of what turned out to be an Autozone tractor-trailer slamming into the back of Valentin's Volkswagen Passat. The truck pushed her car off the road, across the passing lane and into a grassy median.

Valentin's 9-year-old daughter, Angelina, was in the back seat. An unidentified adult female was in the front passenger's seat. There were also two dogs in the car. All of them died at the scene.

State police say Valentin did have her hazard lights on, and she is believed to be the only one wearing a seat belt.

The truck driver, 52-year-old Gino Ruggerio, of Pennsylvania, said he didn't realize that the car was at a complete standstill and was not able to stop in time.

Ruggerio did not suffer any injuries. He is not expected to be charged with any crimes.

All lanes of westbound I-84 were closed for several hours as police diverted traffic off the highway at Exit 3 onto Route 6. The highway reopened shortly after 11:30 a.m.
