MONROE - The new year ushers in major changes in the look of Monroe's town government.

For the past two years, tensions have simmered in the town of Monroe as residents have said they're angry and frustrated with some of the town board's major moves.

Despite widespread public opposition, the board pushed through an unpopular deal to sell undeveloped land to the village of Kiryas Joel.

But the board's power dynamic will see a major shift in 2016 when Mike McGinn and Tony Cardone become its two newest members. Both received huge support in November's elections and have the backing of a community activist group, United Monroe.

Residents say they’re hopeful the new faces will mean better representation.

Supervisor Harley Doles has also gone on medical leave, leaving Councilman Jerry McQuaid as acting supervisor.
