NEWBURGH - A tractor-trailer crashed and almost rolled over the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge this morning.

State police say the accident happened just after 4:30 a.m. on the eastbound side of I-84. They say the truck was pulling two trailers when the driver lost control on a curve and slammed into a concrete barrier. The impact caused the rear trailer to detatch and roll onto the shoulder and median. Guardrails on the bridge approach stopped the trailer from falling over.

The trailer was ripped open, and spilled its contents on the side of the road and a grassy embankment below the bridge. Cargo included various household supplies, as well as 71 lbs. of liquid petroleum, 67 lbs. of liquid propane and 7 lbs. of butane. No hazardous material was spilled.

The road was closed for hours, but two lanes have since reopened.

No one was hurt.
