SPRING VALLEY - Police are searching for the driver of a U-Haul truck that smashed into a Spring Valley home early Monday morning.

Police say they received a call around 3 a.m. from a Dolson Road resident that three men were stealing the two motorcycles from the front of his property with a U-Haul truck.

When police found the truck in question, they say the driver took off at a high rate of speed. Eventually the truck crashed into the side of a house on Zuba Lane and West Eckerson Road.

The driver fled the scene but police found Karl Lapeine, 19, of Spring Valley, and Ely Portillo-Mendoza, 16, of New Hempstead, in the back of the truck. Both suspects are facing multiple charges, including grand larceny.

The truck took out the corner of the house which is used as a laundry room. No one was home at the time of the crash. There was a natural gas leak and the fire department and utility company crews were called in to shut the gas and electricity off.

Ramapo Police Chief Brad Weidel says not only are they still looking for the driver of the U-Haul but there could have been more people who escaped from the truck after it crashed into the home. Weidel is advising people to be alert because police believe this group may have targeted other properties.

"Stuff that's on your property needs to be secure. They go around canvassing areas and looking to see what they might come back later to steal."
