Ulster cop drowns in training exercise

KINGSTON - An Ulster County Sheriff's Office sergeant is dead, after officials say he drowned during a training exercise.

The county sheriff's office says Sgt. Kerry Winters got separated from his partners during an in-water dive training operation in the Ashokan Reservoir. He was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Winters, 51, was a 30-year veteran of the Ulster County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division.

Officials say the investigation into his death continues.
