MIDDLETOWN - A veteran Crawford police officer died after suffering a medical emergency while on the job Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say police Sgt. Eric Meier was investigating marijuana plants in a field on Lybolt Road in Crawford when he collapsed after he suffered a possible heart attack. The 51-year-old later died at Orange Regional Medical Center.

The front entrance and parking lot of the Middletown hospital was filled with his brothers in blue in a show of a support.

Meier was a well-respected officer who served Crawford police for more than 20 years.

"We are going to miss him," says Crawford Police Chief Dominick Blasko.

Grief counselors will be on hand Friday at the Crawford Police Department.

Meier is survived by his wife and children. There is no word yet on funeral arrangements.
