Water back on in Yonkers after main break

YONKERS - Officials in Yonkers say water has been fully restored to all areas of the city, although a boil water advisory remains in effect.

Mayor Mike Spano says it took 48 hours for crews to make the necessary repairs to the water main. About 100 homes and business were without water service earlier today.

Engineers worked around the clock to repair the pipe, located deep within the surface of the southbound side of the Saw Mill River Parkway. A specially designed coupling was needed to fit around the decades-old pipe in order to connect it with a new pipe.

Crews poured concrete around the repaired pipe this morning to support the main. The concrete is reportedly still drying.

Officials do stress that a boil water advisory remains in effect through at least Friday while they await the test results. Residents are advised to boil water before drinking it or using it to prepare food.

There is good news for commuters as two of the three lanes of the southbound Saw Mill Parkway are reopened.
