YONKERS - Westchester County Executive and Republican candidate for governor Rob Astorino is calling on parents to boycott tomorrow's Common Core testing.

In a video posted on his campaign website, Astorino says his children will opt out of the exams, which students are legally allowed to do. He says the decision was made jointly with his wife Sheila, who's a special education teacher.

Common Core has been billed as a way to hold students and teachers to higher standards, but has been criticized by parents and teacher for being implemented with inadequate preparation.

Astorino also accused Gov. Andrew Cuomo of "fast-tracking" Common Core and implementing the testing without any knowledge of what it would do. However, Cuomo has been critical of Common Core testing and part of the state's proposed budget bill would keep results of the testing off students' permanent records for at least two years.

Pat Puleo, the president of the Yonkers Teachers Union and an outspoken critic of Common Core, says she's not endorsing Astorino for governor, but agrees with his decision on boycotting the tests.

"I think that's the only way that the state Education Department will fully understand how upset parents are at this really poor decision to put their children through this," says Puleo.
