SUFFERN - Two brush fires burned at different locations in Harriman State Park on the border between Rockland and Orange counties Monday.

Fire officials say that the first fire broke out near the Pine Meadow area of the park. They say it has already burned 30 acres and is partially contained.

The second fire, which started late Sunday evening near Tom Jones Mountain, is still not contained.
Officials say a shifting wind to the northeast has helped keep the fire away from populated areas, but local homeowners near the southern end of the park remain concerned.

No populated areas are in immediate danger; however, state police did check a nearby cabin to confirm it was not occupied.

The Ateres Bais Yaakov Middle School in nearby Airmont canceled sessions on Monday due to the downwind smoke. As of Monday night, there was no word on whether it would reopen on Tuesday.

State and local officials continue to work diligently to keep the fire contained. They tell News 12 no evacuations have been ordered for the surrounding populated areas.
