CHAPPAQUA - A woman narrowly avoided a collision with a Metro-North train in Chappaqua Saturday morning.

The driver, 67-year-old Cynthia Parent, was trying to cross a rail crossing at Roaring Brook Road when one of the safety gates came down on top of her Chrysler PT Cruiser. The Mount Kisco resident was able to back up, breaking through the gate and escaping collision.

The location is the same one where Rep. Nita Lowey and Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney called for safety improvements last week.

According to New Castle Police Department records, problems with the warning gates at the Roaring Brook Road crossing have been reported 14 times since 2006. The records show that 490 accidents were also reported at the crossing.

Metro-North says that the gate has since been replaced, but was operating as normal at the time. Parent was issued a ticket for obstructing a highway railroad crossing.

This latest incident comes a little more than a month after a Metro-North train collided with an SUV in Valhalla, killing six people.
