YONKERS - A father and son from Yonkers are being hailed as heroes when they jumped into action after an Amber Alert on Tuesday.

Police say it all started on Staten Island Tuesday morning when Johnny Woo, 45, and his estranged wife got into a physical altercation. After police say Woo punched his wife, he grabbed their 2-year-old daughter and drove off.

An Amber Alert was soon issued with information on Woo, the child, and the car and license plate to look for.

Rui Fernandes and his 17-year-old son happened to be driving along the Major Deegan Expressway when the Amber Alert went off on their phones. At just the same moment, a black Kia Sorrento sped past them. "I looked at the plate. And the plate was the same as in the Amber Alert," says Fernandes.

Fernandes began following the car while his son called 911. They told the dispatcher they could see a police car up ahead and to alert the officer that they were coming. "I kept giving the high beams to the police officer until he got the point, I got next to him and said ‘the car, the Amber Alert is right on the right side, let's block him in,’ and that's what we did."

Police were able to stop Woo in the Bronx and take him into custody.

The little girl was taken to a hospital to be checked, and police say she's OK

Fernandes says he's just happy he could help. "Thank the Lord I was the right guy in the right moment, in the right spot."

Woo was charged with third-degree assault and second-degree harassment in the case.
