A New Jersey sculptor will have some of her artwork displayed in New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral during Holy Week.
Carolyn Palmer was commissioned to create a sculpture of Pope Francis. She then created sculptures of Pope Benedict XIV, Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II.
“From beginning to end, it would take about six months on this size. So I was just under two years completing all four,” Palmer says.
All four were finished and installed in November. They displayed in front of the cathedral facing Fifth Avenue. This is the first Holy Week where they are on display.
“It’s just such a blessing to me that my work is seen by a lot of the parishioners and also visitors that come from all over the world. It’s just wonderful,” Palmer says.
Palmer, a Catholic herself, says that she wanted to bring out each pope's personality and soul through their eyes.
"I just hope that they feel an emotion, something from their heart that they can relate to them…that they come to life for them. That they feel their presence,” says Palmer.
The cathedral is open daily to visitors, with extended services during Holy Week and on Easter Sunday.
