No charges in case of man who died in police custody
Five City of Newburgh police officers will not be facing charges in the case of a man who died in police custody last summer.
An Orange County grand jury found Wednesday that there was insufficient evidence against the officers. However, the family of the deceased man, Nathaniel Cobbs, is protesting the decision and claims police officers are to blame for his death.
Cobbs, 25, died last July after struggling with police during a domestic call. Officers used a police dog and Taser gun to subdue Cobbs. At the time, tests showed Cobbs was high on PCP and cocaine. The official autopsy found Cobbs? death was due to the drugs and a heart condition.
Cobbs? family had a private autopsy performed, which they believe proves police force killed him.
The grand jury, after reviewing both autopsies, decided the officers? actions were justified.
Cobbs? family will now try to take its case to federal court.
