More than 100 nurses picketed outside Montefiore Nyack Hospital Tuesday, demanding better contracts.
Members of the New York State Nurses Association have been chanting through the rain while carrying picket signs that say things like 'Patients over Profits.'
They claim they've been without contracts for almost a year after countless negotiations. The nurses are asking for a three-year contract, compensation and benefits. They say they are short-staffed because several colleagues have left to go to other hospitals and haven't been replaced.
"Here in Nyack they are taking care of seven, eight, nine patients at a time and double that when they are covering for nurses who are lucky enough to take a break," says NYSNA President Judy Sheridan-Gonzalez.
Montefiore nurses were united in their demands, with employees from Long Island, the Bronx and Westchester in Nyack to show support.
Officials at Nyack Hospital tell News 12 they have been negotiating with the New York State Nurses Association for several months and that they have proposed a fair deal.
Sheridan-Gonzalez does not agree, saying, "It can't be an issue of having enough funds because Montefiore is buying hospitals everywhere it seems."
