The New York State Senate has passed legislation to repeal the so-called "Walking While Trans" ban.
The law was established in 1976, allegedly to help police officers crack down on people they perceived to be prostitutes.
Lawmakers say it has been used to disproportionately go after members of the LGBTQ community and people of color in minority communities.
Brad Hoylman, a candidate for Manhattan borough president, celebrated the announcement via Twitter saying, “This is a huge victory in the fight for equality.”
