Officials hope that a recently released guide from the New York State Health Department will provide accurate sexual health information to young people.
State officials hope the 22-page report will reduce the rate of sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy by offering evidence-based health education.
Statistics in the report reveal that one in four adolescents are likely to acquire an STD. It adds that one in two adolescents will acquire an STD by the age of 25. Statistics also show that there were 3,300 newly diagnosed cases of HIV in 2012.
"Young people have the highest rates of sexual infections including chlamydia, gonorrhea and even HIV," says Dr. Donna Futterman, who has been working with HIV patients for more than 20 years.
