NYPD detective dies in fatal crash
An off-duty NYPD detective was killed when his car crashed into the back of a Department of Transportation truck in Clarkstown Friday.
According to state police, Detective Christopher Morelli, 36, was driving home to Newburgh from Manhattan on the Palisades Parkway when he rear-ended a slow moving DOT truck escorting a lawn mower.
Investigators say they are waiting for Morelli?s toxicology results, but they haven't ruled out speed or a possible medical condition as causes for the fatal accident.
Morelli had been on the force since 2000 and was promoted to detective in September. He is survived by his wife and mother.
The driver of the DOT truck, Theodore Raabe, of Tappan, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The lawn mower operator was not injured.
A New York State DOT spokeswoman says a staff meeting will be held in wake of the accident.
