One woman is dead after a car plunged into a canal in Pelham Manor Friday morning.

The Mount Vernon Fire Department says the woman was pulled from inside a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee that was submerged in a canal just off the Pelham Parkway.

The vehicle that was at BJs gas station went through a fence and plunged at least 20 feet into a canal just before 9 a.m.

Police blocked off the road for hours as efforts got underway to pull the woman and the vehicle out of the canal.

News 12 was told that a Pelham Manor police officer who was first on scene jumped into the creek, and that he reached the submerged vehicle but could not save her because the doors were locked.

News 12 was told that Officer John Luiso is now receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

The woman's family was on scene earlier but did not speak to reporters.

The identity of the driver has not been released. News 12 did learn she was a longtime employee at The Osborn senior living community.

It released the following statement: "This is a devastating loss for all of us. She loved The Osborn, its residents and the staff she worked with. She was passionate about what she did, and how she did it. She will be greatly missed."

The FDNY, the Mount Vernon Fire Department and Pelham Manor police and dive teams were among the agencies responding to the scene.

Officials say the murkiness of the water made it difficult to pull the woman out of the canal.

The drawbridge of Pelham Parkway was raised to allow three FDNY tugboats into the canal to pull out the car. A tow truck on land assisted the boats in pulling the car out of the canal.

Officials tell News 12 they have pulled footage from the cameras at the gas station. They hope that it will give them a better picture of what happened.
