This week marks the beginning of the end for the old Tappan Zee Bridge, but when the aging span is taken down next year, it won’t necessarily become a “thing of the past.”
The old bridge will actually breathe new ‘life’ into other communities across the state.
"It's probably the largest recycling effort in the history of New York state," says Rockland County Executive Ed Day.
Day says the I Love NY Super Crane will dismantle the old bridge, and they will be using as much as they can to help out other parts of the state to save them some money.
The deck panels, for example, are relatively new and extremely valuable.  Each one is about 50 feet long and weighs as much as a space shuttle.
The Thruway Authority has already received requests for 133 of them from eight counties, including Orange County. This will spare Orange County the cost of having to purchase new ones.
The Thruway Authority will also be eating the costs of shipping and dismantling, and selling off those panels for just $1 apiece.
