Police across the state are out in full force today to target motorists who fail to stop for school buses flashing their red stop lights.

The initiative, called Operation Safe Stop, is an attempt by law enforcement to maintain the safety of children getting on and off buses. It is sponsored, in part, by the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department and the New York Association for Pupil Transportation.

Police say that failure to adhere to school bus stop signs can result in a $300 fine, plus four points added onto the violator's license.
