Orange County part-time prisoners put to work
Orange County is implementing a new plan to get weekend inmates out of jail and off to work. The sheriff?s office says criminals sentenced to weekends in jail will now perform light maintenance work, such as painting and cutting grass, for the county. Corrections officers say weekend inmates usually just watch television and play board games. The sheriff?s office says the work program will save the county money and time. Officials say it costs the county paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep weekend inmates and the process of admitting and releasing them is very time consuming.
The sheriff?s office also says weekend inmates who are usually employed at regular jobs are not a danger to the community.
