A Catholic priest in Orange County is now on a leave of absence, after writing to parishioners about his struggles with alcoholism and celibacy.
The Rev. Jeffrey Mauer, with St. Mary’s Church in Washingtonville, sent a letter to parishioners, posted to the parish Facebook page after checking in to a residential treatment center for alcoholism.
Mauer apologizes for an “improper advance toward another adult,“ that he says he made while under the influence of alcohol.
News 12 reached out to St. Mary’s Church for comment but has not yet heard back.
