A ritual known as Kapparot has the Rockland County Health Department ready to fine the Orthodox Jewish community?again.
Kapparot is a spiritual ceremony, which includes prayer and live chickens. The chickens are later slaughtered, forcing the hand of the Rockland County Health Department.
?Fecal matter on the surface, feathers contaminated with fecal matter,? listed Tom Micelli, of the health department. ?Chicken food is left on the surface that would attract rodents.?
The health department is enforcing regulations hoping to prevent about a dozen different types of contagious diseases, like staph infections or salmonella.
Last year, the ritual landed the community a $3,500 fine for failing to keep the area clean.
?This year they will most likely be fined again because we've inspected three times and found the same situation despite them telling us they would correct the situation and clean up,? said Micelli
Kapparot is a chance for the Orthodox Jewish community to repent during Yom Kippur. Those participating in the ceremony had no comment.
