Some residents and a former Board of Education member say Valley Central School District is taking too long to investigate racist comments left on its Instagram page.
The picture, posted in February, shows a group of smiling junior varsity cheerleaders from Valley Central embracing each other as a team. Comments on the photo were racist and lewd, and were left up for days afterward, according to Glenn Laurie, a father to one of the girls.
Laurie says he contacted school district administrators who took the comments down and said they would investigate. Laurie says administrators were dismissive and haven't followed up.
The district says concerns were taken seriously and that it is working with police to investigate.
Former Board of Education member Joseph Byrne says it's taking too long.
"Racism is not a joke. It's a real issue," he told News 12.
The district says it's taken every measure to prohibit bullying and harassment. It declined to comment when asked which police agency was overseeing the matter.
