Parents organize rally in protest of school closings
Parents and students of Lime Kiln and Hempstead Elementary are organizing a rally to protest the plans to close the two East Ramapo district schools.
The district says it is dealing with a declining enrollment and is trying to close a budget gap that could be millions of dollars in lost funds from the state.
East Ramapo Schools Superintendent Ira Oustacher said it is not something the district wants to do but may have to do.
Some parents are outraged, while others fear that the school closures will depress the property values.
The rally will take place on Jan. 19 at noon outside the Hempstead Elementary School. Meanwhile, the district plans to make a decision about closing the schools sometime in February.
